Posted 12/06/25

16 June - 22 June 2025 : Learning Disability Week, an event organised by the charity Mencap, is an opportunity to raise awareness about different learning disabilities, what life is like for those who have one and to celebrate what people with learning disabilities bring to society.
People with a learning disability can sometimes need extra support to learn new skills, understand complicated information or interact with other people.

What is Learning Disability Week?
This year, Learning Disability Week takes place from 16 June 2025 - 22 June 2025, and the theme for 2025 is "Do you see me?", which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard, included and valued in all aspects of life.Ìý
Learning Disability Week puts the spotlight on affected people in a good way. During this week dedicated to them, they understand that they are special and not alone in the difficulties they face. The week allows people to become more understanding of the unique challenges and rights related to learning disabilities and mobilise all the support to make their lives easier. A greater understanding of why people may have behavioural problems is also communicated.
According to Mencap, a learning disability is a person's reduced intellectual ability, meaning they can face difficulty with everyday activities, such as household tasks, reading, socialising, working at a job or at school, and communicating – which affects someone for their whole life.
People with learning disabilities are twice as likely to experience low self-esteem and self-confidence, social exclusion, and bullying that others don't face, leading to mental health issues. Being diagnosed with a learning disability does not mean a person is not intelligent. It means they need extra support and specialised care to overcome the challenges they face in a particular subject area and learn in their unique way.

Learning Disability Week aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with learning disabilities by raising awareness about important issues, fighting stigma and discrimination, and raising funds for outreach and support programs.
Organisations, advocates, families, and individuals come together to share stories, host events, and provide resources that educate the public. The aim is to break down barriers, encourage inclusion, and support people with learning disabilities in leading fulfilling lives.
To observe Learning Disability Week, you can:
- Lend a helping hand: Help those around you with learning disabilities by playing games and organising activities like art, dancing, and music. This will allow them to express themselves, connect with others, feel less lonely, and boost their confidence. Volunteering to read to students who struggle with reading can also be super helpful
- Advocate on their behalf: You can help sign petitions to help safeguard those with learning disabilities and share information and resources. It is also a good time to speak up when you see any inequalities people with learning disabilities face in private and public
- Get training: People with learning disabilities are at a high risk of developing mental health issues, facing neglect, and even abuse. You can take courses and attend training to help you communicate effectively and have conversations with those affected. Training can also help you know what to do if the person is facing abuse and neglect
- Share stories: Use social media to amplify the voices and experiences of people with learning disabilities. With any social media posts, be sure to use the hashtag #LDWeek2025
Show the world the incredible things that people with a learning disability achieve, smashing misconceptions about what people can do and shining a light on the stigma many still face every day.
