NEW - 51ºÚÁÏ Professional Competency in Food

This competency is designed as a stand-alone qualification, providing all the necessary knowledge and skills needed, to carry out Food duties. It is suitable for candidates new to this subject area, although it is recommended that a person will have some prior experience within Trading Standards.
This qualification will provide you with an understanding and knowledge of all the legal requirements in relation to Food Standards including formal sampling, their application to food to enable you to carry out food duties. You will also learn how food affects health and well-being. This qualification is mapped to the FSA Competency Framework.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The competence for this module is the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of:
- The rationale behind regulatory controls and the legal framework in respect of food and food products in the UK and EU
- The law relating to the import, export, composition, labelling and advertising of food and food products sold for human consumption
- The responsibilities and liabilities of food producers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, importers, primary producers and suppliers of food and food products
- The diligence requirements of food producers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, importers, primary producers and suppliers of food and food products
- A basic knowledge of food hygiene and microbiology in order to effectively undertake inspections at food premises and take food samples without contamination
- The range, extent and limitations of enforcement powers under relevant legislation
- The roles of relevant enforcement agencies and their inter-relationships with Local Authorities
- The Food Law Code of Practice and Food Law Practice Guidance
- Practical enforcement – interventions, investigations, issuing enforcement notices including Improvement and Compliance Notices and alternative enforcement strategies
This online course consists of 5 training days followed by 2 assessment days including a multiple-choice online assessment and an oral assessment. A written submission is required within 3 months of attending the course contact days.
There is a requirement of approximately 3 months of independent learning prior to the contact days, which is supported by resources available via the online portal.
