Construction Products (Insights and Interventions)

This training is designed for local regulators involved in the oversight of construction products, particularly those responsible for identifying, inspecting and intervening in cases of non-compliance.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the context: Define what constitutes a construction product and explain its significance in terms of safety, regulation, and economic impact.
  • Target effectively: Identify high-risk construction products as flagged by OPSS and understand the rationale for prioritisation.
  • Identify and inspect products: Accurately recognise and target select construction products for regulatory intervention.
  • Access resources: Locate and use relevant guidance, instructions, and authoritative materials to support interventions.
  • Conduct physical inspections: Understand how to perform compliance checks, including physical inspections where safe and practical, and to recognise signs of non-compliance for certain product types.
  • Verify compliance: Critically assess documentation and declarations of conformity to ensure compliance with standards and the construction product regulations.
  • Report and share outcomes: To know the process for informing OPSS of regulatory interventions and outcomes.

Measuring Instruments Directive

This course is aimed at those Inspectors of Weights and Measures that are looking for a reminder and updates on those instruments that are covered by the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 and the various amendments that have changed it since the UK’s departure from the EU. There will be a discussion on the various types of automatic weighing instruments, liquid fuel measuring instruments, capacity serving measures and material measures of length.

Learning outcomes: The delegate will have a more detailed understanding of the instruments covered under the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 and the requirements when they are placed on the market or put into service.

Weighbridge Testing in compliance with NAWI Regulations 2016

This course is aimed at those candidates that have begun the S73 Examination to be an Inspector of Weights and Measures and are looking for practical guidance and experiences on how this should be done.

This training will be taking place at Axle Weight Technology Ltd (Axtec) in Runcorn. Delegates are required to attend both days.

Learning outcomes:ÌýThis course will give the candidates a good training on both the theory and practice of the verification of large capacity non-automatic weighing instruments. It will include a classroom element with a discussion of the principles of testing a large capacity weighing instrument and a practical experience of doing this.

Electrical Product Safety

This training is aimed at anyone working in Local Authorities who is dealing with the compliance of electrical products and performing related product risk assessment/s who needs to be able to:

  • Understand required technical documentation
  • Interpret electrical safety laboratory test reports to understand the meaning and significance of the tests and the test results
  • Identify how the consumer, user, or others might suffer harm
  • Identify who or what could be harmed
  • Establish the severity of the hazard
  • Identify the steps to injury
  • Estimate probabilities

No prior knowledge of electrical theory is necessary, but an understanding of the PRISM risk assessment methodology (or other similar risk assessment methodology) is required, and participants should at least be familiar with electrical products and have previously seen typical electrical safety laboratory screening test reports. This session will include a short recap of the electrical safety training delivered last year.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Be able to understand and explain essential electrical terminology; ohms law; electrical insulation; dangers; safety devices & mitigations; other hazards
  • Understand and explain the relationship between voltage, current and resistance; power sources; Class I, Class II and Class III constructions; factors affecting severity of harmÌýÌý
  • Understand electrical current flow; its uses; its dangers; key terminology; protections and mitigations
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of basic electrical theory, be able to read and understand electrical safety screening test reports

An Introduction to the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations 2006

The course is an introduction to the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations 2006. It will consider some of the statistical principles necessary to understand the Regulations; we will have a detailed look at each of them and what they mean to an Inspector of Weights and Measures. There will be an explanation of how to carry out a practical weights and measures check, and the paperwork that can be used for this.

Learning outcomes

This course will give a good outline of some of the statistical concepts necessary to understand the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations 2006. It aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of each regulation and place it into the context of our work.
